How long have you been here?

Painting Puts moved to its current home on Castlegate in May 2018 and we opened 2 months later in July!

Do I pay extra for glazing and firing?

Nope, there’s just one price- you only pay the one price you see.

Are the pots water tight and safe to use for food and drink?

Yes, once glazed and fired, they are completely food safe – occasionally the bottom of the pottery is wiped.

How do these pots differ from ones bought in high street shops?

Our pots are clay not plaster (which pots in shops often are). The paint we use is a specialist paint for pottery (glaze) and not poster or Acrylic paint. We also include glazing and firing in a kiln in the price. And finally, because you paint in a studio you can use specialist tools, learn new techniques and there’s always our expert staff on hand!

Will this paint stain my clothes/skin?

No it’s completely non toxic and water based.

How do you identify the pots are ours?

We write your receipt number on the bottom of the pots with a ‘magic’ pencil that won’t burn away. We also take photos of he pots painted.

How do I write on the pots?

You can use Funwriters, a fine brush or the ‘magic’ pencil.

Do pencil marks burn away?

Yes very light pencil will burn away. If the pencil marks are too heavy they will repel the top glaze though so care must be taken to write lightly.

Can we take our pots home on the day?

No they need to be glazed and loaded into the kiln and fired for two days. Foam clay is our instant ‘take home today’ product.

What is Foam clay?

Foam clay is a non-toxic, self hardening clay containing no harmful substances that can be moulded with, or adhered to pottery, polystyrene or cardboard shapes. Any item using Foam clay can be taken away from the studio immediately!!!

Foam clay contains polystyrene beads that gives the clay texture. Once exposed to the air the clay will start to harden and will dry hard, so lids on the pots need to be put back in as soon as the foam clay is finished with.

Foam clay needs to be applied to a base ONE BEAD THICK…. this will help with the drying process and to help see the item underneath. Depending on how thickly it has been applied this can take up to 12 hours to fully dry.

Foam clay is not food/drink safe so is not advised for any item intended for that purpose, foam clay is also not water tight.

Can we use Foam Clay and paint on the same pot?

No, Foam Clay can’t go in the kiln and anything painted isn’t sealed till it’s fired.

What other design tools are there?
  • Sponges
  • Stencils which work better using a pencil to draw round then paint within
  • Cotton buds and other dotting tools
  • Spatter tools such as pippettes (mix a little water with the paint) and a spatter brush.
  • Bumpy doodles
  • Fun writers
  • Stickers are great for creating white shapes or writing on your piece – they need to be stuck down really well before the pot is painted (they don’t stick if the pot is dusty or already been painted), then painted over and then the sticker must be removed with a pin when the paint is dry, before the pot is fired!
Can I paint light colours over dark?

No you need to work light colours first and the darker colours. Light on dark won’t come out.

Can I mix the paint?

Yes you can but just bear in mind that there is a little risk that the colours you end up with might not be exactly as they looked when you mixed them!

How many layers of paint do I need to do?

Three: thin, even layers get great results. But the more thin layers you can do the better. You may need to do even more for number 14/15 (pink colours are vulnerable in the kiln).

How long will it take to fire my item?

Pots are normally ready for collection in 7 days. After you have finished painting we glaze the item and load it into a kiln where it is fired at a stupendous temperature. We will give you an idea of turnaround times when you come to paint. Clay pieces take 2 weeks. If you are in a hurry and want to take away on the day we also have acrylic paints, decoupage paper and foam clay – none of which need firing.

Can I get my pottery sooner than 7 days?

At some times we can put on an additional firing for items needed in an emergency – ask the staff if this is possible. There is a charge of £5 for this service when available.

Can you post my pottery to me?

Yes we can. Please leave your email details with us and when we have packed your pottery we will get a quote from Royal Mail.  Most items cost approximately £5 to post.

Do I pay on the day?

Yes please, we have a card machine when Keith or laura are in, there are cash machines on the marketsquare

Can I pay by card?

Yes, we have a card machine.

Can I get a takeaway kit to do at home?

Yes – it’s needs to be a minimum or £20 worth of pottery….. with a deposit of £30 which you get back on return of everything. You get paint, brushes, pallets, colour charts, sponges and your pottery

Do I need to book?

Ideally, as you never know how busy it is going to be, but if you don’t get a chance, pop in and we’ll see if we can squeeze you in.

How long is my booking for?

I will never rush anyone (unless we need to close!) so your booking is for as long as you need it for (you will be told upon booking if there is a party or an event on). Creativity takes as long as creativity takes!

Do I have to pay the studio fee twice if I paint more than one item?

The studio fee is per person per session, so you can come and paint a whole set of mugs and spend the whole afternoon here and it will only cost you £3.50 plus the cost of your item, or £2.50 for children.

What happens if I don’t finish in time?

If we are quiet and your table isn’t rebooked there is no time limit – you can stay all day if you want. During busy periods your table will be booked for 1.5 hours.  You are welcome to return to finish your pot at another time and you will only pay the studio fee.

Can I make a Teddy Mountain Bear? How does it work?

Yes! Teddy mountain bears are £16 each. You get the bear, stuffing, a heart of your choice, a certificate, poem and a bag. There are also instructions to go with it. I sell a small amount of Teddy Mountain Bear clothes for an addition £6.99.

Can I take the bear making stuff home to do at home?

Yes of course. Please contact us for more details.

Where is best to park when visiting?

There are a few car parks around Knaresborough you could use, including the Castle Yard car park, the Market Place car park and Chapel Street car park. There is also on-street, disk zone parking nearby on Cheapside, if you’re lucky.

Can I reach you by public transport?

Knaresborough Train Station is a 10 minute walk away and the bus station is 3 minutes walk away.

Are the paints safe for children and babies

All paints are water-based and non-toxic under glazes. They are also completely washable!

Can you help me with baby prints

Early on, footprints are certainly an easier option, but we can certainly help with both. We have a technique and tricks to getting the best prints we can but please understand that sometimes we may need to wipe them away and try them again (as long as you and your little one are ok with that!)

What happens if it goes wrong in the kiln?

Accidents do happen and it’s horrible for you and us if it does! We will issue you with a voucher to the full value so you can come and have a go at decorating a replacement.
